EFFECTIVE LEGISLATIVE REPRESENTATION: UNSCHEDULED VISIT TO ALAYI–ITEM ROAD COLLAPSE SITE

In what stands as a testament to effective and responsive legislative representation, Hon. Nnamdi C. Ibekwe, the Honourable Member representing Bende North in the Abia State House of Assembly, undertook an unscheduled visit to the collapsed section of the Alayi–Item Road shortly after it caved in due to heavy rainfall and flooding.

The incident, which occurred in the evening hours, left the once-busy road dangerously impassable. According to eyewitnesses, the erosion occurred just moments before travelers passed, averting what could have been a tragic loss of lives. While no casualties were recorded, the collapse of this critical infrastructure has sent shockwaves across communities in Bende North.

The Alayi–Item Road is more than a route; it is a vital artery linking Item through Alayi up to Mkporo and other surrounding areas. Farmers, traders, students, and daily commuters depend on it as a lifeline for socio-economic survival. With the road now in a deplorable state, residents face increased hardship, while economic activities and safety are under immediate threat.

It would be recalled that just a few months ago, Hon. Ibekwe had led the House Committees on Environment and Works on an on-the-spot assessment of the road. Their findings and reports were duly submitted to the appropriate authorities for necessary action, even before this unfortunate incident occurred. This foresight underscores his consistent commitment to seeking lasting solutions to infrastructural decay within Bende North.

In recognition of the urgent danger posed, Hon. Ibekwe’s prompt visit once again demonstrates his dedication to the welfare of his constituents. During his assessment of the site, he assured the people that he would channel the matter to the relevant state and federal authorities for immediate intervention. This move is widely seen as a step in the right direction, reflecting proactive leadership and sensitivity to the plight of the people.

Given the magnitude of the challenge, the call has been renewed for Governor Alex Otti, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, and Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, alongside relevant state and federal agencies, to urgently deploy resources for both emergency repairs and long-term reconstruction of the road.

Meanwhile, residents and travelers have been strongly advised to exercise caution and explore alternative routes until government intervention stabilizes the affected section.

The swift response of Hon. Nnamdi C. Ibekwe serves as a reassuring reminder that true representation goes beyond legislative debates—it is about being present, listening to the people, and taking action when it matters most.
